Nestled among the vineyards of northern Portugal, Solar de Vila Meã is a boutique hotel that combines tradition and modernity, elevating Minho’s heritage to a memorable luxury experience. Housed in a 19th century manor house that has been meticulously restored to preserve its charm, this project brings out the best of the local culture by incorporating design elements and materials typical of the region, such as wicker, clay and handmade embroidery. The art of restoring the spaces has been recognised internationally by “VERANDA” magazine in 2025 as one of the 30 most beautiful hotels in the world.
The interior details have been selected to emphasise the relationship between tradition and innovation. Handcrafted furniture, iron elements and Portuguese tiles coexist with contemporary design pieces, creating a cohesive narrative that respects local authenticity while meeting the expectations of the sophisticated traveller. All enriched using regional materials and the collaboration of local artisans, strengthening the identity of the space and the union with the culture of Barcelos. Spread over three separate buildings, Solar de Vila Meã integrates history and contemporary comfort in perfect harmony. In the main building, with three doors, visitors are welcomed in a verdant reception area, as well as being able to enjoy an intimate bar, a signature restaurant that celebrates regional cuisine, and a private chapel.
Here you’ll also find nine unique rooms, each adorned with elements that evoke the authenticity of the region. The design favours noble woods, soft linens and traditional ceramics, creating an atmosphere that celebrates the rustic with a sophisticated touch.
The second building, with its contemporary lines and two floors, offers 16 rooms and 6 duplexs that combine tradition and modernity. These spaces have been designed to guarantee maximum comfort while maintaining an aesthetic link to the surrounding countryside. The décor includes ceilings with traditional ceramic motive reinvented bobbin beds and wicker furniture, recapturing memories of a traditional Portugal, but adapted to the demands of the contemporary tourist.
The communal areas are an invitation to relax and contemplate, with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool surrounded by well-kept gardens that blend in with the property’s 40 hectares of natural landscape. The ‘Barro’ restaurant offers an immersive gastronomic experience, where local flavours are celebrated with dishes made from fresh local ingredients and accompanied by the acclaimed green wine.
The restaurant’s interior, with terracotta tables and clay-coloured chairs, reflects the rustic beauty of the local culture, providing a cosy and authentic atmosphere.
In addition to the comfort of the rooms and the excellent cuisine, Solar de Vila Meã offers activities that allow visitors to explore the region and unite with nature. Walks through the vineyards, picnics in the gardens and moments of relaxation in the spa or gym are all part of the experience.
This refuge is much more than a place to stay; it is an invitation to immerse yourself in the culture, traditions and natural beauty of Barcelos, while enjoying sophisticated comfort.
This project, which fuses tradition with innovation, was developed to capture the soul of the region, offering all those who pass through a hospitality experience that will remain in the memory. Every nook of Solar de Vila Meã reveals an aesthetic and emotional celebration that transforms your stay into a true sensory journey.
